Title: How far can Black Bears swim?
Post by: noelH on Sep 28, 2024, 12:19 PM
At least out to Outer Island. ~10 nm offshore. Outer Island plus IIRC, Sand Is are closed due to black bear issues. Common issue with inner islands. Guessing the bears island hop to Outer.  Back in the '80s while on a sea kayaking trip island hopping to Outer Is I encountered a swimming black bear. Without any real apparent effort the bear was moving along at a decent speed. No real cares, but I wasn't going to get too close to him.

The nice thing about sea kayak camping is you can pack a bear resistant food can. I've had issues with my suspended food bag that is used when backpacking. .  Wonder how many bears have figured out that there is food aboard those anchored sailboats?
