Title: Last Minute Sail
Post by: Wolverine on Sep 10, 2025, 06:46 PM
With the temps and humidity in the mid 70s, I decided to go for a sail. I boarded Miss Adventure and prepped her for the sail. Sailing away from the dock I headed up Kershaw creek with the wind almost on our nose. We tacked our way up until the creek became narrow, causing more tacking than sailing. All the little coves were still and have enough water to house my Compac 19. I must do an overnighter sometime. Sailing down the creek and down wind, I sat in my favorite spot. Slouched against the stern rail with my feet up. This is when we hit a crab pot buoy that broke the golf tee holding the buoyant Rudder Craft rudder down. We headed for a cove and still waters. After replacing the tee we continued down the creek and started up Smith creek when once again a crab pot was struck. I decided to sail over to the wildlife ramps to fix the problem. Not finding any more tees, I climbed down the stern ladder and tightened the nut to prevent the rudder from floating up. With that taken care of a trip to the town dock and walk across the street to the "Bean" for ice cream was in order, until I realized I hadn't brought my wallet. With that the skies were getting darker and a very light drizzle began. We headed back up Greens creek and coasted into our little cove.

Our route and just before turning around on Kershaw creek

I often forget something or have to work on something so I can relate to your sailing very well. ;D Actually sounds like an enjoyable day on the water.

Nice day! I did some tacking last time out just because I hadn't in a while. Nice creek!

Just now reading this. How pleasant. I've been to Oriental one time 21 years ago. We were living in Roanoke Rapids and I was boat shopping. I was ready to move on from my Kells 23. I made a two day loop thru eastern NC. I stopped in Oriental, New Bern, little Washington, Edenton, Elizabeth City. Oriental was very quaint. I'm sure you must enjoy it. One of these days I'd love to visit B&B and one of their messabouts or do the OBX 130 or maybe the Watertribe event. My sister lives on the mainland just across from Harker's Island. One of these days...

I was planning on participating in the OBX 130 this year, sailing there from home, but as usual none of my 3 outboards were. Maybe in 2027. It's my understanding it only happens every other year.

According to the Facebook page, the 2026 iteration of the OBX 130 is already being planned.  I think in 2024, it became popular enough to become an every year event.  The OBX 130, in comparison to other group cruises, doesn't require as much effort on the part of organizers because participants are responsible for themselves.  I had planned to go this year, but ticker problems held me back from preparing.  2025, thanks to tropical storm adjacency, got turned into a 1 day event.

I'm not on FB and that is where all the info and registration is. I'll have to ask the wife to register me.

The OBX 130, unlike similar outings, is just a group of sailors having fun, with no formal organization. There is no registration, you simply tell the group about yourself and whether or not you are coming. All reservations and arrangements are your responsibility, although dates and places are announced on the group. The opposite of a formal organization that can be sued.

As much as I detest Facebook, Facebook does offer a cheap way for groups to share information. No need to pay for a web address or hosting software. In return, Facebook tracks you more than any other Internet company, and sells that info to whom they desire. Many small groups could not afford an internet presence otherwise. So I put up with Facebook, using Firefox to minimize data mining, to access the smaller groups and more rural folks in the country.

I refuse to submit to fb, even if it means missing out. Woth that, if there's a phone number one could call to get info and announce their intentions of coming, I'm in.
