Title: Can Anyone Identify This Fitting?
Post by: Après Vous II on Dec 28, 2025, 12:27 PM
I finally got the cabin on my Windrose 5.5 cleared out, and when I opened up the cover at the foot of the v-berth, I found this fitting. I assume that it is a sonar transducer because there is no corresponding hole in the outer hull and the wire seems to match that attached to a ruined instrument in the cockpit. Any opinions or added information would be appreciated. Thanks

That appears to be a bulkhead fitting that is filled to prevent air gaps. If that in truth is a transducer wire. If there is a liner at that spot and not just outer hull, there would be another piece that sticks through to the topside and then the nut on top pulls it tight. The transducer would then be mounted to the outer hull. Most likely a way to secure the wire maybe, and an attempt to read depth at the forward end instead of the transom.

If you're wanting to take it out I'd make sure there IS an interior liner before destroying this fitting. I had a spot that wouldn't drain in a cockpit locker and ALMOST drilled a hole there before taking exact measurements and a  really good assessment of the whole thing before deciding I was about to drill a hole through my HULL.

I never had any trouble with a transom mount transducer. Once the graph started indications of the water getting shallower, I'd always bear off and give it some room. Just supposing here....basically an educated guess.

Maybe similar to this:

There is nothing on the exterior of the hull in the corresponding location. It's just in contact with the hull interior.

My hope is that it is a functional transducer that can be used by a new sonar to replace the ruined instrument on the cabin bulkhead, but I don't know enough about the technology to know if that is even a possibility. At the moment, I have restoration tasks much higher in priority. I have to get enough of the electrical system working to have navigation lights, design a method of raising the mast solo, and get the boat off the trailer long enough to install a better keel support and some keel guides.

It could be a transducer in a "water mount". I had a boat where the transducer screwed to a fitting that was glued to the hull. Between the hull and the transducer was water. All the air is forced out when screwing down the ring that secures the transducer.

I don't know if transducers are...interchangeable. Maybe someone can comment. Good luck with your tasks!
