Title: Norther
Post by: Riley Smith on Apr 27, 2026, 05:51 PM
Bad boy weather offshore yesterday morning. 75 mph winds. This is looking back toward land. Quick Ollie! Find an island to hide behind! Even with THIS boat you're not outrunning THAT.

Riley, So, is that a wave between the camera and the boat, or is that guy in serious trouble?!?  :o

All I see is waves CB. To my knowledge nobody was hurt. Lotta expensive stuff got wet though. I haven't heard what happened but am pretty sure it had something to do with breakers in the shallow water around the island. I had a bud sitting on the island once and it started getting dark to the north. RUT RO! Time to go, he thought. By the time he got the boat loaded with wife and kids it was too late. Good thing too. He sat there dry as a bone while the land disappeared behind a black cloud and it went between the island and shore. Twenty minutes later it was all over. They clocked it at 60 mph forward speed. That one was later in the summer but the same thing happened yesterday as it did during the Dauphin Island race that one year. That one killed a bunch of folks, although it did come out of the SW instead of the North. You could see the squall line coming for a long way ( and quite a while...maybe hour-hour and a half), before it ran through the race course. I was watching it that day and listened as the first reports came in. I was thinking beforehand surely they have enough sense to cancel the race. Same as yesterday, it was obvious TWO HOURS before that picture was taken it was on its way.

Saw a clip this morning where Sea Tow put floats on that one and brought it in. Which Island was it?

Horn Island I think. Pics came from a friend. People look at me like I'm daft when I tell them that 15 min. Horn Island run has killed a BUNCH of people. That black line in the picture is a big reason why. If it happens in the Summer months, there can be so much moisture in the air you can't see it until it is right on top of you. My Radar has saved a bunch of people in the last 20 years IMHO.
