Title: Closer!
Post by: Riley Smith on Aug 30, 2026, 10:55 AM
It was somewhat cool for an hour or two the last couple of days. Early in the morning before the sun wakes up. Maybe the back of summer has broken! The wind at daylight was from the NE too, although THAT may have been because there is a low pressure area offshore out in the  Gulf. You know...sucking the air to it. It sort of reminds me of my cat, because she will sometimes lay in that particular spot on the patio and roll over on her back, those yellow eyes glazed over in some sort of trance. Her belly fur is soft and has that brown and orange tint of a calico to contrast with her ghost gray dappled body. And it is a trap because she will B-I-T-E you in those moments. Oh, she'll let you get a rub in before latching on with every sharp implement she possesses. And you are OFFICIALLY had.

Yeah, I've seen this game before. Get to the ramp, have a quick set-up, and get roasted by sun before 9am once you get on the water. There IS a bit of wind. Almost enough to chance it....

Sailed, sort of, the boat for the first time yesterday.  75% chance of rain that missed us but it left some wind. More surprises from the previous owners.  Mainsail is not rigged for reefing at all, no ties in reef points, and the outhaul was knotted and appeared to have been in that condition for years.  The topping lift is connected to a line in the boom but was wrapped around the end of the boom 4 times to raise the boom up instead of figuring out why another line that runs through the boom wasn't unlocking at the mast end of the boom either.  There is a third line in the boom that I don't have a clue what it is supposed to do.  We did get the main up in 7 or 8 kts of wind and sailed to the raft up a mile or so away.  Someone, it was my crew this time, threaded the downhaul line through several of the hank ons resulting in a jib that went up begrudgingly a few feet, so I just pulled it back down on deck rather than going forward while getting power boat wakes every few minutes.  I can see a CDI FF2 with a 130 on my shortlist for Christmas.  Rafted up with 7 other boats in the club, drank a few beers, and went to sleep shortly after dark.  Got up and motored back after morning coffee.  The heat kicked in about 9am so we covered everything up and went home.  I'll run out this week and figure out the mainsail. I don't remember the heat bothering me this much in the past.  It may be the several times I projectile vomited while doing hurricane repairs or playing golf when it was just too hot to breath over the years catching up.
