Title: Rope question
Post by: Jfyiii on Aug 26, 2023, 07:11 PM
My catboat was initially rigged with a polyester rope that feels like cotton.

I am trying to find a source as my rope is worn out.  I did find a listing on one website but after an inquiry they haven't handled the product in a long time.

This is their description:
3-STRAND POLYESTER TYPE 77 MULTIPLEX

Spun dacron is a multiplex polyester yarn which has all the characteristics of filament polyester, but has a "fuzzy" surface and feels like cotton. A popular rope because of its soft feel and its superior "gripping" qualities.

Does anyone know where to get this type of rope?

Here's a listing on Defender, a reliable vendor. New England Ropes is a good brand. Tan 3-strand polyester is popular with those trying to replicate manila. There are plenty of double braids that have a soft hand as well.

If you don't like Defender, West Marine has New England Ropes Vintage 3-stand for more than twice the cost, and don't stock 5/16". I'm guessing you'll want 5/16" or 3/8".

Duckworks has 3-strand polyester in white for cheap, also check out the DWX Raid Braid, a soft polyester double braid in more traditional colors.

R+W Rope, another good vendor, has 3-strand polyester in lots of colors, including beige, brown, and white. Hempex, their hemp substitute, is polypropylene.

I see Type 77 Multiplex specifically is mentioned in a couple places online, but not where you can readily buy it. These guys will make it to order. You've probably seen this.

Fisheries Supply is another reliable vendor. They have a spun fiber polyester blend with a softer hand. Cheap enough to order a sample to see if you like it. Probably cheaper than the minimum order above!
