Title: Mast light replacement bulb number P165
Post by: eaglecreeksailor22 on Mar 23, 2024, 10:16 AM
Hello All,
The mast light on my 1996 P165 is not working and when I start trouble shoot it I want to have a spare bulb in hand. Does any one know the number? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, Rich,

I replaced mine last season with an LED, but, unfortunately I don't have the nomenclature of either bulb. If nobody here has the answer, you might be able to get it from Bill Porter at Precision. Good luck!

Did you start by replacing the two prong male plug and cleaning the deck female receptacle? I've replaced the rubber plug twice and sprayed the receptacle a few times. WD-40 seems to work well. The bulb was never the problem, but I use the light infrequently. BTW replacing the plug is a pain and there is not much extra wire to work with.

I had a similar experience as Brian. Replaced the bulb with a LED, then found it was the receptacle inside the boat top.

I plan to do some testing of the receptacles first before going up a ladder to check bulb and socket. I do like to night sail in the peak summer eves so the light will make me legal The rest of the lights work so I could probably BS my way through not having a mast light if stopped on the water. All ready launched for the season and did not want take the furler loose to drop the mast, help not always available when I am.

My deck plug/receptacle fell apart from too many mast stepping cycles I assume. It doesn't seem very practical to maintain for those of us who trailer sail as and arent' always overnight crusing as that area is always getting beat up.
I just went ahead and removed all the mast light hardware off my mast and instead got a little 5" tall rechargeable LED lantern which I can charge inside the cabin and then hoist up my mast using the jib halyard and pull back down using the jib downhaul. I figure I'll never be actually sailing at night.
