Title: Whisker pole mast fitting location
Post by: talbot on Jun 22, 2024, 01:46 PM
I just got a Forespar whisker pole for my P21. It comes with a mast fitting, and advice from Forespar to use it or risk torquing the ends of the pole.

At what distance above the deck should I attach the fitting?
I'm flying a 135 genoa, if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any advice.

Talbot, I've always heard that the pole should be perpendicular to the mast when the sail is poled out. Seems to work well with the one I use.

Yeah, that's what I read. I tried it yesterday. My comment is that the rule should be, "perpendicular and full of wind."
I mounted the fitting based on perpendicular at the dock. When I was out on the lake, I thought my pole was too low. (Pause here for snickers. Real mature, guys. Real mature.) It's not an adjustable fitting, so if I continue to think I'm not getting it up the way I want to (pause), I'll just put a second fitting a little higher.

My headsail is a 115, I wonder if that makes any difference? Oh, and they make a little blue pill for that other thing ...  ;)
