Title: Heaving-to, but not on the water
Post by: FortyFour on May 08, 2023, 04:26 PM
Looks like circumstances may have me relocating fairly soon to the PNW.  At least for a good part of a year. Maybe longer. Has anyone shipped their boat cross country? It seems at least as crazy/sensible as trailering it across. I guess there's the option of finding a boat out there, leaving mine in the East and looking into fractional ownership or something...I can't be owning boats on each coast. That will break the bank and brain. Lots of things in flux right now, throws all my considerations of how the season was going to unfold up in the air.

Hello! I used uship.com to move my P165 from where I bought it in Texas to seattle. Ran me about $2200. Pretty pricey compared to the cost of the boat, but a lot cheaper then commercial boat transport companies.

Whereabouts are you moving to?

hi, Thanks for the info, looks interesting. The quotes I got from commercial shippers were all over the place. Hard to know how legit, and/or solid anybody was.  I'm headed to Port Townsend. I've visited there a few times, but this is a different prospect. Moving is complex...

You got dat right FourtyFour. When we moved from FL to CA, my wife and daughter flew out first. Then I sent our dog on a flight out once they were out there. Then I put my wife's car on a hauler and sent it out (around $1500 AIRC). Finally I hitched up my boat and towed it across the country. A logistical nightmare!

How was the trans-continental trailer drive? Did you sleep aboard? I'm guessing you took the Southern Route. I'm going NE to PNW. tbh, I've trailered my P-18 several times- for a full day or two, but don't find it the most tranquil stress-free road experience. Anybody on here ever trailer thru Canada?

Where in the Pac NW? If you're anywhere close to the Salish Sea, you will definitely want a boat with you.

I used UShip to get P21 from Western NY to Minnesota. I did not have time and had marginal tow vehicle for trip. You post the job on the site and bids are submitted. I only got two bids, took much cheaper bid. Driver was great, flexible and communicative - even climbed up to close portlight when it was raining.  He towed the boat on its trailer. It might be possible to get transport on a flat bed - assume that costs more.  It was not inexpensive - couple thousand dollars (other bid was $5000!).

All in all, the trip went very well. No, I stayed in hotels, since my wife's new employer was paying for the whole move. Yes, Southern route, mostly I-10. Left Deland at noon on a Wednesday in early August, arrived in Santa Cruz at noon the following Monday. Did not want to drive at night, so 5 days. Stayed in Mobile Wed, Houston Thu, Fort Stockton Fri, Phoenix Sat, and Lost Hills Sun. Had some bad storms in Baton Rouge, and in West TX. The mountains East of Phoenix and North of LA were "exciting". My RS22 is 1990 lbs, and I towed her with a 6 cylinder Ford Edge. Actually got better mileage than I expected to. I made it as stress-free as possible by not being in a hurry, setting the cruise control on 60, and staying in the right lane.

My P165 was in Florida and I'm in California, so the seller agreed to meet me in San Antonio TX where I picked it up and drove it home in two long days. Slept in the vehicle one night, a Lincoln Navigator. No problems, just drove 60-65 and like Tim, stayed in right lane except to pass nearly all on the I-10. My friend paid about $2200 to have a guy haul his Potter 19 boat via trailer to Mobile Alabama from Southern California, about two years ago. The I-10 though is quite flat and I presume you'll have to go through the rockies. Not an easy decision, but selling and then buying a new boat is not either easy.
