The cold and the heat, the terror and boredom. My father crossed the Rhine and saw a whole world in chaos. He did things that wouldn't let him sleep well. But once they were in Belgium, and didn't have any food. Good Mississippi guy that he was, they got permission to take some deer, and I have a picture somewhere of them skinning out in a barn in the countryside.
