Talk with the folks at the lake's sailing club about which paint(s) work for them.  The effective paints at a specific location means asking locals what brands and mix works on your lake.

TSBB General Talk / SailPack Regatta - Oriental, N...
Last post by Wolverine - Apr 20, 2024, 08:33 PM
This is the 14th year Oriental has hosted a collegiate SailPack regatta. This year 7 student sailors from UVA are staying in our home.  Wonderful young men and women. There are 18 schools participating from as far as Indiana and Texas to schools up and down the East coast. Even though they are competing against one another, they all get along between races and afterwards. Pics below are some of the field and Connor and Luka from UVA.

Thank you for making me feel so much better about keeping my 130' of bamboo at bay. I have phased out of the more time consuming and boring work. I still cut down to thin but now pay some youths to cut up the 15-25' long bamboo shoots into shorter sections so that they can tote them away.
No need of a tractor and no fear of bears. Never even the sighting of a snake.

Precision / Bottom painting P 165
Last post by eaglecreeksailor22 - Apr 20, 2024, 12:27 PM
Hello all,
Back to sailing after a 10 yr hiatus and as I mentioned last year am sailing a P165 and love it. But will need to repaint the bottom this year. I live in central Indiana and the boat stays in the water from April till November. I usually pull out and pressure wash once during the summer as the sail club has a clean up area close to the ramp.

I need suggestions on type and brand of paint for midwest conditions and quantity of paint needed for one coat. In the past I have used both Inter lux and West marine self sluffing type.

Not looking forward to this project but always said part of boat ownership, last one I painted was a Catalina 25 when I was 60 yrs old, now am 78 and glad the boat is small.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Quote from: noelH on Apr 16, 2024, 05:47 PMJust thought of an (unpleasant) option to either motor.  Those $200 eBay 2 cycle outboards that look like a gas powered brusher, weedwacker motor attached to a shaft with a pop. They sort of resemble the Seagull.  But why? Probably a piece of unproven junk for $200 v. a real outboard with a history for $125.

I have a friend who had one of those Chinese junk outboards, Hangkai, I think, and he used it for his Impulse 21 to get out of the marina. That thing was noisier than an older 2 HP Honda air coooled motor, and those were LOUD. Anyway, the Hangkai shows on eBay at $229. I observed (and heard) one of them actually working. I thought about one for my little 10' skiff, but they are so dang noisy, I decided to just stick with my oars.

For Sale Boats / Re: XXXX - P-165 for Sale
Last post by tbodine88 - Apr 19, 2024, 12:44 PM
Quote from: FortyFour on May 12, 2023, 09:36 AMBecause of my circumstances, needing to switch coasts suddenly, which I detailed on another thread, I've been considering selling my P-18. This idea does not have much ease to it, as I'm very attached to my boat, though it won't do me much good 3000 miles away. I was guessing my P-18, which sounds similar in condition to that 165, similar amenities more or less, was worth twice the asking price as that 165. I'm not really clear on the whole thing, and not eager be a buyer or seller...But sometimes gusts come out of nowhere and we have to adjust. Responses or insights into my predicament are welcome.

You can easily trailer a p18 3000 miles in a couple of dayZ and save the hassle of selling and buying new.

P18s are selling available for 4000 or less

Good luck

Quote from: Quantico Frank on Apr 19, 2024, 06:41 AMSounds great guys! You seem about ready to splash. I was told by my bottom-painter last week that they have a number of school boats ahead of me to be painted before they can get to "Spirit". But since then we have had about 10 days of spectacular wx, so who knows where my boat is in the queue right now?

Couple of questions: do you guys on moorings not have to worry about getting your bottoms painted, and if that's so, how do you avoid it? Also, do you not worry about water temperature? Obviously nobody PLANS to go swimming this time of year....

Lake Nokomis is a small body of water and warms pretty quickly in the Spring. That said it's still dangerously cold in early May and like Dan mentioned, getting to and from the boat is what I'm most concerned about. PFD at all times this early in the year.

I'm a little unique in my approach to keeping the bottom of my boat clean and wouldn't do it if my boat were much bigger. I actually pull it out of the water every 3 to 4 weeks to clean off the bottom. Just far enough off the ramp so it's out of the way, - usually early on a weekday morning when it's not busy. It takes a leisurely 90 minutes then it goes right back in. I could finish in an hour if I were more purposeful about it.

I used to use "Barkeeper's Friend" in powder form and a green 3M scrubby, but last year I started using "Booyah Clean" as recommended by Fireman Dave. It works pretty well and has made cleaning much easier.

This year I'm going to experiment with a product called "VS721" which goes on more like a wax. Two coats are recommended and supposedly limits growth. Any growth that does accumulate will theoretically wipe off with a sponge, and they recommend you do that once or twice during the season. You can do it while the boat is still in the water. It's expensive at $75 for a bottle.

I will still probably take my boat out after 3 to 4 weeks but if all that is required is a wipe down I'll consider it a success. If it turns out I can pull the boat out less frequently, even better.

It can't be applied over anti-fouling paint. It has to be either bare gelcoat or an epoxy finish.

TSBB General Talk / Deck Joint Continued

Last fall I was able to get the original sealant scraped out. Now it's warm enough to finish the job. I started yesterday by shimming open the space for about 6 feet at a time and using Acetone and a scraper as a final preparation.  I've decided on using Sikaflex 291 for the new sealant. It is supposed to create a strong gasket and resist sagging during the curing process. After I finish I've got work to do inside the cabin. The hull liner is pretty badly stained from the the leakage and my woodwork needs attention. We have new cushions being made and the wiring needs organizing.

I didn't follow through with Bahamas plans last winter because of the needed hull/work, but I'm planning a cool cruise for the summer. I thinking of hauling the boat up to Northern Michigan. From there I can check out the islands in Northern Lake Michigan,  and sail over to Door County in Wisconsin, then make my way through the straits of Mackinac, maybe stop and Mackinaw, head into the North Channel, cruise the length of Lake Huron, the Huron River, Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and back to our Marina on Lake Erie. (I have a plan for getting my trailer home, and I may have several different crews)

Other upgrades include a new jib and I'm looking at new GPS models.
