Obviously sailing isn't fun for everyone. And I suppose we'd all have our limits.
"They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep." Psalm 107:23-24

That is truly a sad story.  We all think we "had it tough" when growing up, but that kind of isolation for a kid can have life-long effects.

I had a pretty good upbringing. Very thankful! Looks like the girl did her best to make something of her life and has had at least some success at that, if not a lot of success.
