I saw this on FB and made immediate plans to buy it and was the lucky guy. In good shape, mostly garaged in the past I would guess. Despite the fact it had no rudder and a flat tire off the rim I recognized it as a value though new sails will be necessary. Now I am on the hunt for a rudder. Glad to see your link which presents LilQuark as she was found. Hopefully it will be preserved here. One problem not disclosed until I arrived on site was the lien sale paper work in lieu of an actual title. We will see if it is all there.

Great that you are going to save another small sailboat from disappearing. Sounds like a good value. New replacement for the rudder might cost more than the boat.

Yes a new Ruddercraft appendage would be more than twice my cost for the boat and the trailer. But I make a habit of avoiding retail purchases as sales tax revenue only encourages tax hounds to further revenue hunts. My bigger issue will be the lien sale paperwork and bill of sale, as supplied to me, was insufficient to satisfy DMV. As usual, DMV is very good at making you wait, but not so helpful when you get your few moments in front of the barely-civil-servant. At first the clerk said my handwritten bill of sale was incorrect as it showed me selling the boat to the person I bought it from. On closer inspection (reading it again), he had to admit it was correctly worded. He disappeared with my holographic instrument documenting the transfer of value to consult some other functionary. When he returned he seemed to resent the fact I was correct and punched some of the info from the lien sale documents into his machine. He was able to determine the HIN was in their system with a lien hold of "over $1500". HE would or could not tell me the exact amount of the lien nor the name of the lien holder of record, nor type of lien (mechanic, tax, storage).

Surprised, I asked why. He said the state of California does not recognize paperwork from an individual lien sale (Linda's Lien Sale Service apparently did not qualify). The clerk said the lien sale must be conducted by a licensed business such as a dealer, marina or service shop. I suspect this may be a personal property tax lien from Alameda County. I once dealt with that (passive/aggressive) entity on another boat I acquired from a guy who bought it at a lien sale from, I think, Svendsen's. It took some doing to set that boat to rights.

I will continue to post developments to my "Rescue, Restoration and Release of Lil' Quark" story as I progress. My intent will be to help and encourage others who find their passion for small, neglected but worthy sailboats suddenly becalmed by harsh reality and/or lazy tax hounds. Meanwhile any information on the history of Lil Quark would be appreciated. In another post I will detail some 'treasures from the bilge' as I document the items acquired with the boat as well as the necessary steps to make her ready for voyaging.

Third trip to DMV with coveted "appointment" sticker but it still took two hours to get an assigned ticket number and finally appear at window #7 where I had started back in January. Then another wait while a phone call was made to the "Lien Department" in Sacramento. Turns out the paperwork is complete except for the lien holder's signature and date of sale to me. Another try after securing that signature (a two hours round trip drive but I dare not trust the mail with one of a kind paperwork nor seller apathy or forgetfulness) and it may be all over but "the late fees". But it looks more hopeful than it did. JM
