The new normal?

Lake Superior like our weather has gone schizo. Conditions over a year may average out to "normal", but day to day tend to be the extremes.  At least for winds and temperatures.

Yesterday, today, and maybe tomorrow. Gale force gust creating double digit high waves.  Add the weird currents resulting from a huge difference between the warmer than old normal surface and barely above freezing deep cold water.  Can get real nasty. Just ask the commercial fishing boats. Nets drifting upwind due to the deep water current while dealing with downwind boat drift with weird and dangerous waves.

Two winters with basically no ice cover means no snow to reflect the solar radiant heat resulting in high evaporative water loss and warming surface water temperatures.  Lake level is really low again. But at least in April the rate of rise has been some of the most rapid on record. Takes trillions of gallons to raise the Lake level just an inch.

I'm as confused as the weather.

Sea of Change for Superior, PBS North documentary. Released '23.  On the to watch list. Maybe tomorrow if it is another rainy, blustery, windy day.
