A small town, just 8K people or so, on fairly large Winyah Bay and near the huge Santee River delta/marsh area, with a high percentage of protected lands all around.

Five rivers feed the Bay, one being the second largest river basin on the East Coast - the Yadkin/Pee Dee. All waters are tidal, in the range of 4.5" average, and vary from brackish to salt, depending of course on how near the ocean you go. Distance from launch to ocean is around 12 miles at the Bay entrance, and it is ~8-10 miles farther to the Santee mouths.

Water access is via 2 different ramps: East Bay, and the Carrol Campbell Complex, both on the Sampit River. Might want to exercise a bit of caution at low tide at either, due to the local "plough mud" (plough is pronounced "pluff", and it is fine, sticky yet slick, and very stinky ;) ) that will be on the ramp surface affecting traction, especially for heavier rigs at low tides.

East Bay is basically in-town and heavily used by locals and fishing guides. A nice setup, parking for 30 or more rigs, nice bathrooms, with a 3-wide fairly gently sloped ramp. Also a dedicated kayak ramp. Launching from here, you are a few hundred feet from the open water of the Bay.

The Campbell Complex is also nice, much larger, with 4 or more ramps (I forget :) ), and parking for probably 3-4 times that which is available at East Bay. The ramps are steeper, and a bit more affected by current,, newly made of concrete with deep scorings for traction. It is about a mile upriver from East Bay, and is accessible at the western bottom of the Sampit Bridge on Hwy 17, with a traffic light to get you back out onto the highway easily.
