Thank You to Charles for another great detailed explanation. I've had good luck using Stabil, but this sound like a better routine. I just finished impeller replacement, oil change, gear lube change, and fresh water rinse on my Tohatsu and my brother's Honda. We ran gas with Seafoam through them both, and ran the gas out, including choke pull as they sputtered out. All good.

QuoteI looked a them and I do like the new ones that recharge themselves while sailing. ($3100+)
Don't bother with the prop turning to charge battery.  It's a disaster on a small sailboat.  If you read the performance data, it won't charge until you are doing 4kts, and only gets a real charge at 5kts.  Dragging that prop to make it turn is going to slow you down mightily under sail, and mess up your rudder control.  If you don't believe me, leave your whatever outboard motor down while doing 5kts.  In my case, when I get to 5kts I'm straining the tilt lock that prevents the motor from kicking up.  And usually stressing the steering lock.

I'm looking at a portable solar panel, and a 140AH LiFePO battery to carry spare charge for the motor (and provide lights and cabin fan).  Or if I feel rich, splurge on a 2nd battery ($1100 - I think not).  The solar panel would be deployed either on the bow or more likely in the after part of the cockpit.  Either one is going to get some shading at best so getting full output isn't going to happen except at anchor.

I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing.

Wayne , I think it depends if it's a new or a used motor ..
