Popup tent for scamp

I ordered the one-man Londtern popup tent off Amazon, and it came in today. I used the 10% coupon and prime card credits I had, so the total cost was just under $40. I was pleased to see that it had a door at each end as well as the windows and the screens were no-see-um mesh. having the doors at each end will allow for good airflow and make it much easier to attach the tent tie downs at both ends of the tent. I looks like it will fit well on the scamp with the fill in boards I made to extend from seat to seat. It was easy enough to set up. However, I think it might be a bit of a comedy act to fold up on the boat. I am not at the boat so wasn't able to test this on the boat yet. I understood how to fold it back but found there was a good deal of resistance from the stiffness of the poles to doing so.  Yet I managed it on my first try. You basically make figure 8 and then fold the top of the figure 8 over the bottom of the 8. This makes a sort of round configuration. It wants to fight against you as you do so. Then you do the same thing again and use the attached elastic strap to hold it in place. After which you put back into its carry bag. So as to let the air out of the tent as you fold it, I keep to windows and doors open while folding it.

Two people not on the large size could sleep in it but you would be shoulder to shoulder. It might provide a bit more space by sleeping head to foot. I am about 5' 11" tall and had sitting head room when sitting on the floor of the tent. I think a small waterproof tarp cut to fit across just the top and attached to the guy line tie offs would aid keeping rain off. I didn't test the waterproofness but am a bit leery of it.

I will hopefully set it up on the Scamp this weekend if I can get out to the club. I like that it has such good airflow. All zipped up it will definitely collect condensation in my opinion So a tarp over the boom would allow you to keep the widows open.

Here are a few photos I took of it set up. I will post more when I set it up on the scamp and give a report on the comedy act when I do so.

Your thread and mine started at 12:59! Go figure!

Doug, Looking at the pics, I'm wondering if the roof of the tent will have enough space under the boom?  ???
(I can't find seat-to-bottom-of-boom measurements anywhere, which I will also need for a future Bimini top.)  :P

Keep the pics coming! It's VERY helpful!  ;D

I believe my mast is shorter than normal because of the previous break. However, it is a foot or more over my head when sailing. Also, I can raise my lazy jacks to raise the boom and spar if needed. The down haul would limit how high I could raise it with the lazy jacks but can be disconnected. But I well get a measure of it from the seat for you. The tent height is stated as 39" which I am guessing is the inside height so it may be 40-41" to the pole sleeve. When sitting in the tent the top is no more than 6" over my head. My one concern is whether I will need to remove the tiller or just push it to the side.

Well, I headed out early to beat the heat. Drove the hour to the Club hoping the tent would fit and also that the wind forecasts were wrong. As forecasted there was no wind to sail by, but the tent just fits. The front goes in under the cabana and the tiller sticks in through the back door. The tent is the same size as the pole I use for the canvas tent I made so will fit under the boom. I'll use the canvas tent when it's colder but will use the popup when it's hot.

Tent takes up the cockpit and the cabana.

I'll get in and out at the stern.

Both my canvas tent pole and the popup are the same height.

For the cross-seat filler boards I used groups of 3 1x4s strapped together. They go in the stern compartment through the center seat hatches.

Sitting in the tent looking toward the stern. Notice the tiller.

The double zipper allows the screen door to be closed completely.

Looking toward the bow.. There is a small ring at the front used for hanging a light. I clamped the USB desk fan to it. Yes, the fan is running!!

I have two USB ports and two USB-C ports on the battery voltmeter. the fan uses very little power. I have two fans just in case!

I managed to store the Popup with the canvas tent in the front.

I was pleased that it seemed easier to take down on the boat than it did on land yesterday. Nor was it hard to put up, but there was no boom and sail in the way because I didn't put them up. No wind. I have two cleats on the cabana face and added two eye straps to the outside of the transom for guy line tie downs. Sorry CB I forgot my tape measure.

Yay! Looks pretty good too! That'll work.

I forgot to add that there is room to walk on the seat if the tent is pushed to one side, and the floor poles are flexible and can be pushed further out of the way if needed.

Doug, the SCAMP tiller doesn't rotate up?

Doug SC

No there is a short deck over it at the transom that will not allow that. So, the tiller is fixed in the rudder head. I could replace the bolt with a more easily removable pin and just take it off. I have a rope tiller tamer and can immobilize the tiller. I have been thinking I might be able to hinge the tiller where it goes past that deck but fear it would weaken the tiller to do so. I can live with it like is or shorten it and add a tiller extension which might be the best wat to go.
