A milestone

Tomorrow I'll celebrate my 70th birthday.

40, 50, and 60 were not all that impactful. 70 seems a little different: perhaps it's that my mortality is all the more real. I'm thankful I'm still in good health and hoping/praying for more good years -  years to enjoy my family, serve the Lord, and do a little sailing.

"The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away." Psalm 90:10.

To commemorate this illustrious occasion, I'm linking to my one and only youtube video: the building of Discipleship which I launched three years ago on January 17, 2023, my 67th birthday.

"They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep." Psalm 107:23-24

Happy Birthday Dale!!

The video was great!!!  I hated it!!! It made it look too easy.  You should be more like Charles, belaboring and overthinking the details, cussing the weather, etc, so that it looks really hard for that is the only deterrent with regard to my considering another build.

When I approached the finish line with mine, I was complaining often, primarily about the weather.  Someone asked my why I did it and the answer was "well I had this motor I didn't know what to do with"  They replied did you ever think about selling it. Hmmmm....

Hey, I'm two weeks from 79 and feel remarkably well, so fight off old and have fun doing it.

Oh, I had my days in the build process. In looking back, sometimes I wonder, "how did I do that?" LOL. Sure a lot of head-scratching and such in building a boat. And a lot got in the way of her maiden voyage. I finished around Thanksgiving but didn't launch til January - weather, holidays etc got in the way. Couldn't believe it took so long. This was my fourth build (and likely last).

"if by reason of strength they be fourscore..." sounds like you're gonna make it in good style. If I forget, happy early birthday to you.

That's a lovely video!  Happy birthday!

Happy Birthday!!!

And a nice video! When I look back I'm amazed that I was able to work through the problems and get a boat built  ;D  I'm 71 now and understand the sentiment. Why God has kept me alive this long I'll never know.

Really?!?  ???
I just thought I was being thorough!!  :'(
One of my over-riding concerns on this project has been whether or not I'm boring people with something that is fascinating to me, but maybe to other people, not so much.
Something I'm NOT apologizing for, is "overthinking the details"; in the coming weeks (and hopefully, not the coming months!)  :o we'll be illustrating the payoffs for details-obsession, earlier in the build.
And ya know, it's SUPPOSED to be hard to build a boat!  :o
If it wasn't, EVERYBODY would build boats and Hunter, Catalina, and O'Day, would all be out of business!  :P
Oh.  Wait.  :-X

Dale, Happy Birthday.  :)
But, I'm holding out for the "bloopers" video!  ;)
I've included all my bloopers, as I went along.  ::)
And on a personal note, I have to say I'm in awe of someone who takes straight pieces of wood and bends them into such lovely curves. The egg-crate slots-and-tabs construction of a SCAMP precludes all that and while it may look more complex, it's actually much easier to do.
My SCAMP may be more utilitarian and more capable as a micro-cruiser than your boat, but it will never look as graceful, as your CIY 16 does.

Happy Birthday, Dale!  70 is a milestone.  I'm looking at 73 this year.  Never thought I'd live this long.  I admire you guys who have the patience and fortitude to build a boat (enjoyed the video, btw).

Doug SC

Yes, indeed happy birthday. It's a proven fact that birthdays are good for you. The more you have the longer you live. ;D Yes, I agree it is an impressive video!

Charles, I have also enjoyed every excruciating detail of your Scamp build!  ;D

Blooper video is scheduled for production sometime in 2050. Lol.

Oh, I had some bloopers no doubt. I've actually documented the whole build on the Wooden Boat Forum, on my own blog, and I believe on this forum before the change-over. I'm sure some of the bloopers were included.

Your boat will indeed be more suited for said cruises. Hey, if Howard Rice chose the Scamp, you know you have the best available micro-cruiser on the planet!

Here's to many happy sails for both of us.

While we're at it, here's one of my biggest bloopers. When I glued in the daggerboard trunk, I got it out of plumb! Oh, man! I couldn't have that! So I cut through the hull on three sides of the trunk, flexed it plumb, and re-epoxied it in place.

That's why they make paint. ;)
