Misson Bay

AWESOME sail today at Misson Bay with my buddy David. Perfect winds, 10-15, not too gusty, and from a steady direction. We did about 14nm in about 4 hours, just cruising around the bay and dodging the races that were going on. I made a vid that I need to put on youtube, will post that after I get home. We both badly needed this sailing fix!

Mission Bay sounds wayyy cooler than Monroe Bay, but I did get out today for three and a half hours. Great steady 5 knot breeze from the NNW and very flat water on the Potomac River. The first time I have ever sailed in long pants! We'll see how much I enjoy cool to cold weather sailing. My wife was my trusty first mate again. She's beginning to feel more comfortable with a good breeze and the boat heeling a bit.
Started getting a little brisk as we headed back into the sun towards Colonial Beach. I would have liked to sail straight into Monroe Bay as there wasn't much boat traffic on a Monday, but it is a tight channel and straight into the wind today. Dropped 'em both and motored in. Water was mostly glass by now. The St. Pauli girl took great care of us at the pier (see photos. OK, it was an Octoberfest, not a St. Pauli. Details!)
Put the boat to bed and got one final shot of the harbor as the sun faded.
The only complaint I have is we sailed too long, so I didn't have time to grab a couple dozen oysters to roast when we got home ('bout an hour drive). That, folks, is exhibit A under "first world problems".

Tim - nice video clip. Can't ID the racing fleet, however.

Jim - My wife occasionally joins me, but has sailed enough not to fear healing. I think I'll keep her as crew and first mate. Where I sail the wind often starts very light, builds up to a max around 4 in the afternoon then quickly dies. It is not unusual to motor home. I differ with you on a couple of things: We like our clams and oysters raw, followed by a fresh pint of Sam Adams! Yes, life is good (and we should be generous in our charity to those less fortunate).

Awesome Jim! That area looks just as beautiful. Hey, I hardly ever get to sail in shorts anymore! And as for oysters, well, those aren't really a "thing" out here, although I wish they were.

Thanks Tom! I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for my next sailing adventure, as unfortunately it most likely won't be until early next year. You'll have to rely on Ron D.'s adventure vids I guess! ;~P

Hey did you find my dad's watch when you were out there? When I was a lad of 9 or so, my brothers and I sailed our Sabot sailing dinghy on Mission Bay. One day, my dad gave us his watch so we could be sure to be back on time. The older brother brain trust slipped it onto the tiller handle. Of course, at the first cry of "Helm's a lee" the watch sailed off the tiller and sank to the bottom. As the youngest of us 3, I was not held responsible, heh heh. It is a very cool sailing site, protected but benefitting from the shore breezes. Enjoyed the vicarious sailing with you there!

No, didn't find any watches Richard, but I'll make sure to look for it next time ... <grin>

Mission Bay is probably my favorite place to sail out here, although there are other similar places that I have not yet visited. It checks a lot of boxes: easy to get to from here, great ramps that are generally not too busy, easy anchoring areas (unlike San Diego Bay), and a great big bay to sail in, that like you say, has the great wind, without the ocean swell/currents. And it's easy to go out the pass and sail the ocean if that's what you want to do.
